Battery Going Flat, Alarms That Aren't Interconnected, a Rental That Hasn't Been Checked in Years
It’s More Common Than You’d Think
Most homeowners don’t think about their smoke alarms until one starts beeping at 2am with a flat battery or worse, when it actually matters. Western Australian regulations around smoke alarms have tightened significantly in recent years, and a lot of homes, particularly older ones and rental properties simply don’t meet current requirements. A smoke alarm that isn’t mains-powered or isn’t in the right location isn’t doing its job properly. For homes built from 1 May 2014 onwards, hard-wired interconnected alarms are also required, so when one sounds, they all sound. For older properties, the requirements differ, and in some situations such as apartments on concrete slabs where cabling was never installed, 10-year lithium battery alarms are the accepted alternative.
Here’s what we commonly see:
- Battery-powered alarms that haven’t been tested or replaced in years
- No interconnected smoke alarm system if one goes off, the others don’t
- Alarms that aren’t mains-powered or interconnected as required for properties built from 1 May 2014 onwards
- Rental properties that haven’t had smoke alarms checked or upgraded
- Older homes with alarms in the wrong locations or not enough of them
- Homeowners who aren’t sure whether their current setup is compliant
If you’re not confident your smoke alarms are compliant and working properly, it’s worth getting it checked, it’s one of those things you don’t want to find out about the hard way.
A Flat Battery or a Non-Compliant Alarm Won't Save You When It Counts
It sounds obvious but a smoke alarm that isn’t working or isn’t in the right spot is essentially no alarm at all. For homes built from 1 May 2014 onwards, alarms that aren’t interconnected also fall short of what’s required, if one doesn’t trigger the rest, someone in another part of the house may not get the warning they need in time. In a real fire, the difference between an alarm that wakes you up and one that doesn’t can be life or death. Beyond the personal safety side, non-compliant smoke alarms in a rental property or a property being sold can create real legal and insurance complications for owners and landlords.
Getting it done properly now is far simpler and far cheaper than dealing with the consequences of getting it wrong.

Not Sure if Your Smoke Alarms Are Up to Standard?
We'll check your current setup, let you know exactly what's required and give you a clear, honest quote - no pressure, no overselling.
We Check, Advise and Install - No Guesswork, No Shortcuts
Getting your smoke alarms sorted properly is straightforward when you know what’s required. Here’s how we handle it:
We assess your current setup
Before recommending anything, we check what you have, where alarms are located and whether your existing installation meets current Western Australian requirements. You’ll get a straight answer on what’s compliant and what isn’t.
We advise on what’s actually needed
WA smoke alarm regulations specify the type of alarm, location requirements and interconnection. We’ll explain exactly what applies to your property whether it’s a family home, a rental or a property going through a sale.
We install the right alarm for your property
Not every property can be hard-wired, apartments built on concrete slabs where cabling wasn’t run during construction are a common example. In these situations, 10-year lithium battery alarms are the accepted compliant alternative. For homes built from 1 May 2014 onwards, we install hard-wired, interconnected alarms so when one sounds, they all sound. We’ll assess your property first and recommend the correct solution before anything is quoted or installed.
We position them correctly
Placement matters. We install alarms in the locations required under current regulations not just wherever is most convenient to wire.
We test everything before we leave
Every alarm is tested after installation to confirm it’s working correctly and communicating with the rest of the system.

Harrison and Integrity Power Solutions Pty Ltd have been fantastic to work with. I had several electrical matters that I wanted and needed attending to in my home. Harrison provided a courteous and professional initial engagement via email, which then extended through in-person quoting and job completion. Harrison was on time, responsive, knowledgeable and able to offer advice to any relevant query thrown his way. The completed work was completed to a very high standard with all areas (being most rooms in my home) respectfully left tidy after after works were completed. I wouldn't hesitate to ask Harrison and Integrity Power Solutions to undertake any future electrical work that may be required in my home. Thank you for a job well done!Posted on Google![]()

1. What does WA law require for smoke alarms?
Western Australian regulations require mains-powered smoke alarms in all residential properties, but the specific requirements depend on when your home was built. Homes approved for construction from 1 May 2014 onwards must have hard-wired, interconnected smoke alarms, meaning when one activates, they all sound. Homes built before this date are not automatically required to have interconnected alarms unless the property undergoes certain major alterations or additions that trigger current building code requirements. Requirements also vary depending on whether the property is being sold, rented or is owner-occupied. We'll assess your specific situation and advise on exactly what applies, no guesswork, just a straight answer.
2. Do I need interconnected smoke alarms?
It depends on when your home was built. If your home was approved for construction from 1 May 2014 onwards, yes, hard-wired, interconnected alarms are required so that when one detects smoke, every alarm in the home sounds simultaneously. For homes built before that date, interconnection isn't automatically required unless major renovations trigger the current building code. There are also situations — such as apartments built on concrete slabs where cabling wasn't installed during construction, where hard-wiring simply isn't possible. In these cases, 10-year lithium battery alarms are an accepted alternative. We'll assess your property and recommend the correct solution for your specific situation.
3. How many smoke alarms do I need?
It depends on the size and layout of your home. Current regulations specify minimum locations including bedrooms, hallways and living areas. We'll assess your property and advise on the correct number and placement.
4. I have a rental property - what are my obligations?
Landlords in WA have specific obligations around smoke alarm compliance. For rental properties in homes built from 1 May 2014 onwards, hard-wired interconnected alarms are required. For older properties, the requirements differ, and for apartments where hard-wiring to a concrete slab isn't possible, 10-year lithium battery alarms are the accepted alternative. We work regularly with property managers and landlords to ensure rental properties meet the correct standard for their specific property type, and we provide documentation after every installation.
5. Can you replace existing battery alarms with mains-powered ones?
Yes, this is one of the most common upgrades we carry out. We hardwire new mains-powered alarms into your home's electrical system and interconnect them throughout the property. For apartments on concrete slabs where hard-wiring isn't possible, 10-year lithium battery alarms are the correct compliant solution, we'll confirm which applies to your property before any work is carried out.
6. How long does a smoke alarm installation take?
For a typical home, a full smoke alarm upgrade is usually completed within a few hours. We'll give you a clear timeframe when we quote based on your property.
